The idea of getting a great smile without having to wear metal braces is pretty appealing. But, its not as new an idea as you might think. Dentists and orthodontists were noticing as early as 1945 that certain types of retainers could create small tooth movements. But back then it would have been a messy and time consuming process to make it happen so while it was a great idea it remained in the “wouldn’t it be nice someday” file.

Fast forward to the late 1990’s and two clever Standford MBA students named Zia Chishti and Kelsey Wirth had an idea. Zia noticed that if he didn’t wear his retainer for a few days his teeth would go crooked but as soon as he wore his retainer his teeth would straighten out. From this aha moment the system we now call Invisalign was born.

Together, Chishti and Wirth created Align Technologies in 1977 and the first set of clear Invisalign aligners went into public use in May 2000. And while it has spawned many imitators it remains the most recognizable and most utilized form of clear aligners in use today. Over two and a half million people have been treated using this innovative technology.

Invisalign can be a great alternative for those who do not want the look and feel of traditional metal braces. The treatment time is no longer than traditional braces and since they can be taken in and out, oral hygiene is often better. Many patients find them quite comfortable and convenient. But like with every upside there can be a downside. Invisalign isn’t for everyone. Only certain types of bites can be properly treated with this technology. Traditional braces are still the best option for people with open or deep bites and significantly crooked teeth. It is also totally based on patient co-operation, so if you do not wear the aligners as prescribed.....well, they just don't work!

As Invisalign develops better and better technology it has become a good fit for more and more of our patients. As a Board Certified Orthodontist you can be assured you are getting the best technology combined with Dr Kersten's orthodontic expertise.
